The designs of the Amsterdam School of architects sometimes drew inspiration from native buildings in the Indonesian archipelago. This plan for a residential building takes up that influence once again. In this instance, a spirit house from New Guinea was the basis for the design. The overhanging hood structure is edged by a continuous steel frame that comes to a point in the ‘hijsbalk' - the hook found in most Amsterdam houses and used for raising and lowering furniture and other items. The false front of the steel frame leaves plenty of room behind for bay windows.
This unusual building is nonetheless perfectly suited to serve as an Amsterdam canal house.
