Housing and retail in the Nieuwe Foeliestraat Amsterdam
Sixty years ago, the construction of the IJ Tunnel tore apart the urban fabric around Rapenburg and Foeliestraat. A new residential block is now being built at this location, where you enter the city from the IJ Tunnel. This robust block follows the large proportions of the blocks on Nieuwe Foeliestraat and Valkenburgerstraat. Behind the brick facade, inspired by the finely detailed architecture of the Amsterdam School, and with windows that taper towards the top (like those often found in the old canal warehouses in the city), twenty-four homes will be integrated into the urban fabric. The street, currently dominated by commuter traffic in and out of the city, will be given a new lease of life by the large display windows of the ground-floor commercial spaces.
